You support the Sunday School President and often oversee specific teachers or the class schedule. Sunday School's job is to make the second hour worth attending. Your job is to help it do that.
Day One
Do These Things First
Meet with the Sunday School President.↗ text them
Ask: What's my specific assignment? Am I overseeing specific teachers? Is there a secretary I should meet?
Get the list of current Sunday School teachers and their class assignments.
Know who's teaching what, how long they've been in their calling, and whether there are any open teaching slots.
Sit in on the current adult class if you haven't recently. Know the feel of the room before you try to support the people in it.
Know the Come, Follow Me schedule. Sunday School follows Come, Follow Me — know where the class is in the year and what's coming.
Find out what the president needs most. Is there a class that needs a permanent teacher? A teacher who's struggling? An organizational issue?
Your Role
What the SS Counselor Actually Does
Sunday School is a lean organization: a president, up to two counselors, a secretary, and the teachers. As counselor, you often serve as the point of contact for a specific teacher or set of teachers — checking in on them, ensuring they have what they need, and flagging concerns to the president.
You may also be responsible for substitute teacher coordination — one of the more practical, week-to-week tasks in Sunday School. Know who can teach on short notice and have their contact info ready.
The teachers are the product. Sunday School's quality is entirely determined by the quality of the teaching. A counselor who invests in the teachers — who checks in, offers encouragement, and ensures they have resources — is directly investing in the second hour for every adult in the ward.

Every Week
Presidency meeting
Sunday School presidencies often meet briefly (monthly or bi-weekly). Bring updates on your assigned teachers.
Teacher check-ins
Periodic contact with the teachers you oversee. A brief text — "How's the class going? Anything you need?" — makes a significant difference.
Substitute coordination
When a teacher can't make it Sunday morning, you're often the one arranging a substitute. Keep a short list of people willing to cover on short notice.
Second hour
Be present during the adult class. Your presence signals that the leadership cares about what happens in the room.
